Year 9 were thrown into the deep end of experimental music when they were given a page from a real aleatoric score to interpret. Stockhausen composed Zyklus in 1959 for solo percussionist and the title of the piece is reflected in the fact that there is no set starting point. The player may begin anywhere and read from the score anyway up, even backwards – the score is in fact spiral bound to facilitate this.
